ISO is an acronym (of sorts) standing for “International Organization for Standardization”, which is an international regulatory committee dedicated to maintaining hundreds of ISO standards for every branch of industry imaginable. 164 countries are members, and ISO standards are designed to make trade between countries easier by standardising products and processes around the world. In other words, if a widget in country A is built to a certain ISO standard, it should match an identical widget built in country B.

And no, nobody knows why it’s called ISO instead of IOS.
