The team at ShapeCUT are an exceptional bunch of steel experts, whose combined experience would span hundreds of years’. You’re about to meet one of our newer additions to the team, Shane Spinks, who joined us in early 2021.
Shane is one of our two Account Managers here at ShapeCUT. You may have already had the pleasure of meeting him if you’re one of our customers operating South of the river. Shane has a wealth of experience thanks to his many years in the automotive industry and after taking some much-deserved time off, we were happy to welcome into this new role: A role in which he has hit the ground running, even with the challenges of these unique times we’re all living through.
I come from an automotive background, and I’ve supplied Jack (Odabashian, our Founder & Managing Director) his vehicles since 2004, so I’ve known him for 17 years. When I left automotive, I took six months off, and during that time caught up with Jack for coffee and a chat once a month. He asked me to come and see him early on in the year about a great opportunity. He said that he’d never had anyone on the road at ShapeCUT looking after his customers and that it was something he’d love to do.
He said “You’ve looked after me for so many years, would you like to look after my customers?”. And it’s all evolved from there.
I look after all our profile cutting services south of the Brisbane river. My main role is to keep a relationship between the current customers and build business with the new ones in the area. Currently we have around 8,000 customers here, and I look after around 4,000 of them.
It’s a role that our customers have never had before. I think they appreciate the level of service it allows.
It interests me that it’s completely different to what I used to do. I have been working a lot on the road. But in current times, obviously that’s a bit different. I try to do as much from the office, as a lot of people aren’t able to have visitors at the moment.
I’ve got a lot of freehold in my role. I’m sometimes a bit of a ‘gopher’. If there’s a profile cutting job that’s just been finished and needs delivery in hurry but we’re waiting on a truck, I’ll jump in the car and go and deliver it. I strongly believe instead of just sitting there and waiting for the delivery truck the next day, it’s better to do what you can to get profile cutting jobs delivered fast. It gives me a bit of a hand in meeting the people as well.
Most of the customers I visit and supply cut steel parts to are in fabrication and engineering. But we get a whole mix. For example, a great business we work with are A1 Rubber. They don’t have anything to do with steel fabrication, but if they need a machine to do a certain job, like a conveyor belt, they’ll build it in-house with their own boilermakers and engineers. So we’ll supply the profile cut steel to help them produce their machines.
It’s a very family orientated business. Everyone really gets along and there’s a good job/life balance. Which is really important to me.
It’s a nice change coming from a large national business to this smaller, tight-knit team. But also, people don’t realise how big we actually are in terms of our capability and scale. It’s hard to see from the road, but we’re actually Queensland’s largest private profile cutting company.
Shane loves working with our customers to identify how ShapeCUT can best meet their steel cutting and metal processing specifications. Give our team a call any time to talk through your profile cutting requirements.
If you’re in the market for a new role, ShapeCUT are hiring a number of positions at the moment. Drop us an email with your resume – we’d love to hear from you.
